When the USAF 18th FBG converted from F-51 (P-51) Mustangs to the F-86 Sabre in late 1952, several pilots from the Sabre-equipped 4th and 51st FIWs were transferred in to help with the jet conversion. One of these pilots was Maj. James Hagerstrom, who proceeded to add 6.5 MiG-15 kills to the two that he had previously scored with the 4th FIW. He was the 18th FBG's sole F-86 Sabre ace.
The F-86 Sabre was a transonic jet fighter aircraft. First flown in 1947, the F-86 entered service with the US Air Force in 1949. The Sabre is best known for its role in the Korean War, where it was pitted against the Soviet built MiG-15. In addition to its use in Korea, the F-86 Sabre also served in various stateside and overseas roles throughout the early part of the Cold War. It was by far the most-produced Western jet fighter with a total production, of all variants, of 9,860.
