In late 1952 Joseph C. McConnell Jr. was assigned to the 39th FIS/51stFIW at Suwon Air Base in South Korea. Between January 14, 1953 and May 18, 1953 Captain McConnell became the top USAF ace of the Korean War with 16 MiG-15 victories. During the war McConnell flew three different F-86 Sabre’s all named “Beauteous Butch II”; a pet name for his wife.Opening canopy

The F-86 Sabre was a transonic jet fighter aircraft. First flown in 1947, the F-86 entered service with the US Air Force in 1949. The Sabre is best known for its role in the Korean War, where it was pitted against the Soviet built MiG-15. In addition to its use in Korea, the F-86 Sabre also served in various stateside and overseas roles throughout the early part of the Cold War. It was by far the most-produced Western jet fighter with a total production, of all variants, of 9,860.
