The Douglas A-20 was designated Havoc but British Commonwealth countries referred to them as the Boston in a bomber/attack variant and Havoc in night fighter and intruder variants. The RAF considered the aircraft to have too short a range to bomb German targets and in 1941 181 aircraft began to be used in night fighter and intruder roles. The RAF designated 169 aircraft as Boston Mk.IV. Boston Mk.IV #BZ405 was scrapped in 1947.
The A-20 Havoc was an American light bomber, attack and night fighter aircraft operated by the USAAF and allied air forces during World War II. It was known as the Douglas Boston in Great Britain’s Royal Air Force and Royal Australian Air Force and as the DB-7 in Soviet and French Air Forces. The night fighter variant was designated P-70. The A-20 prototype was first flown in January 1939 with the first production aircraft flying on August 17, 1939. Although it was not the fastest or longest-range aircraft in its class, the A-20 Havoc/Boston/DB-7 distinguished itself as a tough and dependable combat aircraft. Production ran until September 1944, with 7,478 built in several variants (7,098 by Douglas and 380 by Boeing), almost half of which was delivered to the Soviet Union. The A-20 was retired by the U.S. Air Force in 1949.
