The USAAF 410th Bomb Group was activated in June 1943 in Oklahoma and joined the 9th Air Force. Equipped with the Douglas A-20 Havoc they flew their first mission on May 1, 1944 from Gosfield, England. The 410th took part in operations leading up to D-Day and the invasion. The 410th BG moved to Coulommier Air Base, France in September 1944 and remained there until February 1945. In December 1944 they helped stop the German offensive in the Ardennes. 7X and white cowling rings identified the 645th BS.
The Douglas A-20 Havoc was a light bomber and night fighter aircraft used by the United States and allied air forces during World War II. It was known as the Boston in Great Britain’s Royal Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force and as the DB-7 in Soviet and French Air Forces. The night fighter variant was designated as P-70. The prototype was first flown in January 1939 with the first production aircraft flying on August 17, 1939. Although it was not the fastest or longest range aircraft in its class the A-20 Havoc distinguished itself as a tough and dependable combat aircraft. The A-20 was produced until September 1944 with 7478 built in several variants (7,098 by Douglas and 380 by Boeing), almost half of which was sent to the Soviet Union. The A-20 was retired by the U.S. Air Force in 1949.
