The first F-16 for the Iraqi Air Force was delivered in a ceremony at the Lockheed Martin facility in Fort Worth, Texas on June 5, 2014. This aircraft, a two-seat F-16D (Iraqi serial number 1601) is the first of thirty-six F-16s for the reconstituted Iraqi Air Force. The aircraft are being produced under contract from the US Department of Defense to meet specific requirements of the Iraqi Air Force. The contract includes equipment and support provided by Lockheed Martin and other US and international contractors. Iraq is the twenty-seventh nation to operate the F-16. The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine fighter aircraft built by General Dynamics, that later became Lockheed Martin. Originally designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multi-role aircraft that can perform various kinds of missions. First flown on January 20, 1974, the F-16 entered operational service with the USAF in January of 1979. It has an internal M61 Vulcan 20mm cannon and multiple locations for mounting missiles, bombs and other mission equipment. Although it is no longer being purchased by the USAF, improved versions of the F-16 are still being produced for export customers. Over 4,500 F-16s have been built for the U.S. Air Force and the air forces of twenty-five other nations.
