The 179th Fighter Squadron “Bulldogs” began as the 393rd FS in 1943 and was deactivated at the end of WWII. In September 1947 the 393rd was re-activated as the 179th FIS in Duluth with the Minnesota Air National Guard becoming part of the 148th Fighter Group in 1960. From 1990 to 1991 the 179th FS/148th FG received the F-16 Fighting Falcon and in 2010 re-equipped with the F-16C Block 50 to become Wild Weasels with a mission to Suppress and/or Destroy Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD). In 2012 the 179th deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan.
The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine fighter aircraft built by General Dynamics, that later became Lockheed Martin. Originally developed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multi-role aircraft that can perform various types of missions. First flown on January 20, 1974, the F-16 entered operational service with the U.S. Air Force in 1979. It has an internal M61 Vulcan 20 mm cannon and hard points under the wings for missiles, bombs and other equipment. Although it is no longer being acquired by the USAF, improved versions of the F-16 are still being built for export. Over 4,500 F-16s have been produced for the USAF and the air forces of twenty-five other nations.
