Description

Hobby Master 1:72 Air Power Series Diecast Model

General Dynamics (Lockheed Martin) F-16DG Fighting Falcon - 90-0778, 63rd FS, 56th FW, USAF, “Foxbat Killer”, December 27, 1992

1:72 Scale.  Length: 8.25".  Wingspan: 5.5"

The 19th and 33rd TFS of the 363rd FW deployed from Shaw AFB, SC in support of "Operation Southern Watch”. On December 27, 1992, F-16 Fighting Falcon 90-0778 was on a 4-hour flight adding flight hours so that the aircraft could go to phase inspection. The aircraft belonged to the 19th TFS, but was on loan to the 33rd TFS and flown by Captain Gary North using the call sign “Benji 41”. During the flight Captain North encountered an Iraqi MiG-25 Foxbat that had crossed the 32nd north parallel and entered the no-fly zone. During the encounter Captain North fired an AIM-120 missile that destroyed the MiG making it the first time an AIM-120 was fired in combat and the first F-16 air-to-air kill in "Operation Southern Watch”.

The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine fighter aircraft built by General Dynamics, that later became Lockheed Martin. Originally designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multi-role aircraft that can perform various kinds of missions. First flown on January 20, 1974, the F-16 entered operational service with the USAF in January of 1979. It has an internal M61 Vulcan 20mm cannon and multiple locations for mounting missiles, bombs and other mission equipment. Although it is no longer being purchased by the USAF, improved versions of the F-16 are still being produced for export customers. Over 4,500 F-16s have been built for the U.S. Air Force and the air forces of twenty-five other nations.
