Convair F-106A Delta Dart #58-0795 was completed in November 1959. On December 4, 1959 it was delivered to the 27th FIS at Loring AFB, Maine. This aircraft was the test bed for the new clear top canopy and the Vulcan Gun Pod “Project Sharp Shooter” at the Air Defense Weapons Center at Tyndall AFB in Florida and flown by Maj. John Mantel. In 1987 the aircraft was sent to AMARC, converted to a QF-106 drone in 1992 and shot down on May 11, 1994.
The F-106 Delta Dart was a supersonic all-weather interceptor aircraft used by the US Air Force from the 1960s until the 1980s. Its main mission was to intercept invading Soviet bombers. The F-106 originally began as an advanced version of the F-102 Delta Dagger but included so many design changes and modifications that it became a new aircraft with its own designation. Similar to the F-102, the F-106 had a virtually identical wing, was designed without a gun or provision to carry bombs, and carried air-to-air missiles in an internal weapons bay for streamlined flight.
First flown on December 26, 1956, the F-106 entered service with the USAF in June 1959. The F-106A as well as the F-106B two-seat trainer served with USAF and Air National Guard units until 1988 in the continental USA, Alaska and Iceland, as well as brief periods in Germany and South Korea. Although contemplated for use in the Vietnam War, the F-106 never saw combat nor was it exported to foreign customers. The aircraft was commonly referred to as the “Six”.
