Convair F-106A Delta Dart – #60453, 49th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron (FIS), U.S. Air Force, Griffiss Air Force Base, New York, 1986

1:72 Scale.  Length: 11.75".  Wingspan: 6.4"

Convair F-106A 56-0453 was the third F-106 produced at their San Diego plant and delivered to the USAF on September 30, 1957 as 60453. It was retained by Convair for various testing until August 1961 then released to the 318th FIS, 325th FW at McChord AFB, Washington. For the next twenty-one years it was shifted several times between the 318th FIS, the 48th FIS, ADWC at Tyndall AFB, Florida before reaching the 49th FIS at Griffiss AFB, New York. In 1987 #60453 was sent to storage and was destroyed in 1995.

The F-106 Delta Dart was a supersonic all-weather interceptor aircraft used by the U.S Air Force from the 1960s to the 1980s. Its primary mission was the defense of the United States from an invasion by Soviet bombers. The F-106 began as an advanced variant of the F102 Delta Dagger but, it featured so many modifications and design changes that it became a new aircraft with its own designation. The F-106 was similar to the F-102 in that it had a virtually identical wing, was designed without a gun, or provision to carry bombs, and carried air-to-air guided missiles in an internal weapons bay for streamlined supersonic flight.

First flown on December 26, 1956, the F-106 entered service with the USAF in June 1959. The F-106A as well as the F-106B two-seat trainer served with USAF and Air National Guard units until 1988 in the continental USA, Alaska and Iceland, as well as brief periods in Germany and South Korea. Although contemplated for use in the Vietnam War, the F-106 never saw combat nor was it exported to foreign customers. The aircraft was commonly referred to as the “Six”.
