Hobby Master 1:72 Air Power Series Diecast Model

Convair F-106A Delta Dart - "57-2494", 101st FIS, 102nd FIW, Massachusetts ANG, Otis AFB, MA, April 15, 1982 "Cape Cod"

1:72 Scale.  Length: 11.75".  Wingspan: 6.4"

On April 28, 1972, the Massachusetts Air National Guard 101st FIS started receiving the first of 26 Convair F-106 Delta Darts. Originally "57-2494", c/n 8-24-77, the 100th F-106 produced, was assigned to the 95th FIS in August 1959. On June 5, 1972 “57-2494” was received by the 101st FIS where it flew until it was retired to AMARC on December 29, 1987 and stored as FN 163. It was later converted to a QF-106 target drone and shot down by a missile on August 27, 1996.

The F-106 Delta Dart was a supersonic all-weather interceptor aircraft used by the US Air Force from the 1960s to the 1980s. Its primary mission was the defense of the United States from an invasion by Soviet bombers. The F-106 began as an advanced variant of the F-102 Delta Dagger but, it featured so many modifications and design changes that it became a new aircraft with its own designation. The F-106 was similar to the F-102 in that it had a virtually identical wing, was designed without a gun, or provision to carry bombs, and carried air-to-air guided missiles in an internal weapons bay for streamlined supersonic flight.

First flown on December 26, 1956, the F-106 entered service with the USAF in June 1959. The F-106A as well as the F-106B two-seat trainer served with USAF and Air National Guard units until 1988 in the continental USA, Alaska and Iceland, as well as brief periods in Germany and South Korea. Although contemplated for use in the Vietnam War, the F-106 never saw combat nor was it exported to foreign customers. The aircraft was commonly referred to as the “Six”.
