Hobby Master 1:72 Air Power Series Diecast Model
Douglas A-26B Invader 13th BS, 3rd BW, USAF, Iwakuni Air Base, Japan, August 1950
1:72 Scale. Length: 8.25". Wingspan: 11.75
The U.S. Air Force 3rd Bomber Wing was stationed in Iwakuni, Japan as part of the occupation force when they began operations in support of the Korean War. They transferred to Kunsan AB South Korea in August 1951. On January 4, 1952 A-26B-56-DL Nan serial 44-34372 c/n 27651 began its departure from Iwakuni AB. Part way through the take-off run pilot Dick Gerrity tried to abort and ran off the end of the runway into a soft sand beach. When the nose gear hit the sand it collapsed, causing the aircraft to flip over. The A-26 was carrying frag bombs that opened and scattered bomblets everywhere. Fortunately the crew members were hauled from the wreck just before the tide came in.
In 1941 the Douglas Aircraft Company began work on the A-26 Invader medium-bomber. By the end of production there were 2,452 aircraft produced for all variants. The A-26/B-26 was the only U.S. bomber to take part in three wars, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The confusion with the use of the designation B-26 began when the Martin B-26 Marauder was retired and, in 1948, the US Air Force dropped the A (Attack) designator so the Douglas A-26 became the B-26. The A-26 made its first European appearance in late 1944.
