On February 12, 1957 the squadron was moved to Bitburg Air Base in Germany, where it remained until 1992. In February 1959 the 525th FIS received its first F-102 Delta Dagger and used them until 1969. F-102 56-1111 was sent to MASD (Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition) in 1975. Later it was converted to a QF-102A and ended its service as a PQM-102 target.
The Convair F-102 Delta Dagger was an interceptor aircraft built as part of the backbone of the U.S. Air Force’s air defenses in the late 1950s. Entering service in 1956, its main purpose was to intercept invading Soviet bombers. The F-102 was the first operational supersonic interceptor and Delta wing fighter of the USAF. It had an internal weapons bay and could carry both guided missiles and rockets. The official name for the F-102 was Delta Dagger but it was often referred to as the “Deuce”. A total of 889 F-102s had been built when production ended in 1958.
