The 494th TFS “Panthers”/48th TFW moved to RAF Lakenheath, England in January 1960. The squadron flew the General Dynamics F-111F Aardvark between 1977 and 1992 and re-equipped with the F-15C Eagle in 1994. F-111F #72-1450 had been assigned to the 493rd TFS but was transferred to the 494th TFS for deployment during Desert Storm. 72-1450 was later transferred to the 524th FS “Hounds of Heaven” until 1996 when it was sent to AMARC for storage pending a possible sale to Australia but was scrapped in 2010.Opening canopy

The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark entered service with the US Air Force in July 1967 as a medium-range aircraft designed for interdiction and tactical strike. The F-111 was also used as a strategic bomber, reconnaissance and an electronic warfare aircraft. Some unique features of the F-111 when it was introduced included variable-geometry wings, crew seating in an escape capsule cockpit, terrain following radar and afterburning turbofan engines.
