In January 1960 the 493rd TFS “Grim Reapers” / 48th TFW equipped with F-100 Super Sabre’s moved to RAF Lakenheath, England. In 1972 the 493rd was re-equipped with the F-4 Phantom II which they flew until 1977 when the F-4s were sent to Nellis AFB and after a few more trades the 493rd TFS received General Dynamics F-111F Aardvark. F-111F 70-2403 was produced in 1970 as C/N E2-42 and assigned to the CO of the 493rd TFS. The 493rd TFS re-equipped with the F-15C Eagle in 1994.Opening canopy

The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark entered service with the US Air Force in July 1967 as a medium-range aircraft designed for interdiction and tactical strike. The F-111 was also used as a strategic bomber, reconnaissance and an electronic warfare aircraft. Some unique features of the F-111 when it was introduced included variable-geometry wings, crew seating in an escape capsule cockpit, terrain following radar and afterburning turbofan engines.
