The name Ruptured Duck was first used on B-25B Mitchell 40-2261, which was flown on Jimmy Doolittle’s famous Tokyo Raid on April 18, 1942. The next aircraft to use the name was a B-24 Liberator, 42-95354, of the 389th Bomb Group and then with the 564th Bomb Squadron at RAF Hethel between June 13, 1943 and May 20, 1945. The latest user of the name Ruptured Duck is an FB-111 Aardvark constructed in 1967 as c/n 10 serial 67-7196. In 1989 it was assigned to the 393rd BS, 509th BW at Pease AFB, NH. This aircraft was later converted to an F-111G.
The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark entered service with the US Air Force in July 1967 as a medium-range aircraft designed for interdiction and tactical strike. The F-111 was also used as a strategic bomber, reconnaissance and an electronic warfare aircraft. Some unique features of the F-111 when it was introduced included variable-geometry wings, crew seating in an escape capsule cockpit, terrain following radar and afterburning turbofan engines.
