In 1972, USAF 1st Special Operations Squadron operated Skyraiders from bases in Thailand during the Vietnam War. A-1H #52-139738, nicknamed 'The Proud American', was associated with pilot Ronald Smith and carried distinctive nose art reflecting crew identity and morale. The A-1H was used for close air support and combat search and rescue escort missions, providing cover for downed aircrew and ground forces. Its long endurance and heavy armament made it highly effective in these roles. 1st SOS crews flew demanding missions in hostile conditions, contributing significantly to rescue and support operations.

The Douglas A-1 Skyraider originated as a carrier-based torpedo/dive bomber. Deliveries as the AD-1 to the U.S. Navy began in 1946 and in 1962 was renamed A-1. It was the first single-seat torpedo/dive bomber to serve with the Navy. The primary mission of the Skyraider was close air support for ground troops because of its heavy ordnance load and accuracy. The Skyraider had great success in Korea and Vietnam. There were 3,180 Skyraiders built in seven major models and 28 different versions.
