Douglas AD-6 (A-1) Skyraider – VA-85 “Black Falcons”, U.S. Navy, USS Forrestal, 1959
1:72 Scale. Length: 6.5". Wingspan: 8.25"
US Navy Attack Squadron 859 (VA-859) was a reserve unit called to active duty on February 1, 1951. On February 1, 1953 they were re-designated Attack Squadron 85 (VA-85). This was the second squadron to be assigned the VA-85 designation. It wasn’t until 1958 that the squadron became known as the “Black Falcons”. Throughout VA-85s existence they flew only two types of aircraft, including three variants of the Douglas Skyraider and, starting in 1964, the Grumman A-6 Intruder. The squadron was decommissioned on September 30, 1994.
The Douglas A-1 Skyraider originated as a carrier-based torpedo/dive bomber. Deliveries as the AD-1 to the U.S. Navy began in 1946 and in 1962 was renamed A-1. It was the first single-seat torpedo/dive bomber to serve with the Navy. The primary mission of the Skyraider was close air support for ground troops because of its heavy ordnance load and accuracy. The Skyraider had great success in Korea and Vietnam. There were 3,180 Skyraiders built in seven major models and 28 different versions.
