On October 8, 2017 six US Air Force F-22 Raptors arrived RAF Lakenheath with the purpose of demonstrating their commitment to NATO and as a show of force to deter any actions that would threaten the security of the region. On October 17, 2017 an additional six Raptors arrived at RAF Lakenheath and included in the second arrival was Raptor # 09-4185 from the 27th FS “Fightin Eagles”. After a brief stay at Lakenheath six of the twelve F-22s; including 09-4185, departed for Langley AFB, Virginia on October 19, 2017.
The Lockheed Martin/ Boeing F-22 Raptor is a single seat, twin-engine fighter aircraft that uses stealth technology. It was designed as an air superiority fighter, but has additional capabilities which include ground attack, electronic warfare and signals intelligence roles. It is constructed using 39% titanium, 24% composite material, 16% aluminum and 1% thermoplastic by weight. All of these components contribute to the Raptor being a lightweight, extremely maneuverable extremely fast aircraft. The F-22 Raptor was first flown in September, 1997. The first production F-22 was delivered to Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, on January 14, 2003.
