The USAF 94th FS, 1st FW have called Langley AFB, Virginia home since June 1975. The 94th was created at Kelly Field in Texas in August 1917 as the 94th Aero Squadron. In April 1918 the squadron became known as the Ring in the Hat Squadron and was home to several Aces such as 1st Lt Eddie Rickenbacker “America’s Ace of Aces”. In 2005 the 94th began their transition to the F-22 Raptor with #10-4194 c/n 645-4194 being the last F-22 delivered to the squadron.
The Lockheed Martin/ Boeing F-22 Raptor is a single seat, twin-engine fighter aircraft that uses stealth technology. It was designed as an air superiority fighter, but has additional capabilities which include ground attack, electronic warfare and signals intelligence roles. It is constructed using 39% titanium, 24% composite material, 16% aluminum and 1% thermoplastic by weight. All of these components contribute to the Raptor being a lightweight, extremely maneuverable extremely fast aircraft. The F-22 Raptor was first flown in September, 1997. The first production F-22 was delivered to Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, on January 14, 2003.
