On September 26, 2003 the first operational F-22 Raptor (01-4018) was delivered to the USAF. Raptor 18 was assigned to the 43rd FS stationed at Tyndall AFB, Florida. Deactivated in 1994 the 43rd FS was re-activated on October 25, 2002 and assigned to the 325th Fighter Wing, Air Education and Training Command. Their role is to provide air dominance training for the Raptor The squadron can trace its beginnings back to the 43rd Provisional Squadron in 1917.
The Lockheed Martin / Boeing F-22 Raptor is a single seat twin-engine fighter aircraft that uses stealth technology. It was designed as an air superiority fighter, but has additional capabilities that includes ground attack, electronic warfare and signals intelligence roles. It is constructed using 39% titanium, 24% composite material, 16% aluminum, and 1% thermoplastic by weight. All of these components contribute to the Raptor being a lightweight, extremely maneuverable extremely fast aircraft. The F-22 Raptor was first flown in September, 1997. The first production F-22 was delivered to Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, on January 14, 2003.
