Hobby Master 1:72 Air Power Series Diecast Model

Curtiss SB2C-4 Helldiver - “White 15”, VB-12, USS Randolph, U.S. Navy, February 1945

1:72 Scale.  Length: 6".  Wingspan: 8.25"

On February 16, 1945, Air Group 12 began aerial attacks against mainland Japan. VB-12, with 22 SB2C Helldivers and operating from the USS Randolph, were part of the assaults on Tokyo, surrounding airfields and other targets. During the week that followed air strikes were also made in support of the landing at Iwo Jima. On February 25, 1945 the USS Randolph left the area and sailed to Ulithi atoll in the Caroline Islands, which was a major staging area for the U.S. Navy in the western Pacific during late 1944 and early 1945.

VB-12 squadron had one of the most distinctive aircraft marking schemes in the PTO, using a bold white striped tail and white ailerons as well as the aircraft number being placed just to the back of the engine cowling. During this time period a 3-digit aircraft number system was in use but VB-12 kept the 2-digit system.

The Curtiss SB2C Helldiver was a carrier-based dive-bomber aircraft produced for the U.S Navy during World War II. It was developed as a replacement for the SBD Dauntless. The SB2C was first flown on December 18, 1940 but, because of delays due to design changes, it did not make its combat debut until November 11, 1943. In spite of its problems the aircraft was flown through the last two years of the war in the Pacific with a fine combat record. Curtiss built a total of 7,140 SB2Cs in several variants. It remained in active service with the U.S. Navy until 1947 and naval reserve units until 1950.
