On June 21, 1945 the 120th TRS was reconstituted and eleven months later was re-designated as the 120th Fighter Squadron and assigned to the Colorado Air National Guard. The 120th FS ‘Colorado Cougars’ were stationed at Buckley Field, Lowry AFB, Colorado. In January 1961 the unit was again re-designated, this time as the 120th Tactical Fighter Squadron. In May 1968 the squadron was sent to Phan Rang Air Base, South Vietnam with their F-100Cs. When the 120th returned from Vietnam in April 1969 they were re-equipped with the F-100D variant, which they flew until April 1974 when they converted to the LTV A-7D Corsair II.
The North American F-100 Super Sabre was a single-engine jet fighter aircraft that served with the U.S. Air Force and the Air National Guard. First flown on May 25, 1953, the F-100A entered operational service with the USAF in September 1954. It was capable of supersonic speed and made extensive use of titanium throughout the aircraft. During the Vietnam War, the F-100 flew extensively over South Vietnam as the primary close air support aircraft until it was replaced by the subsonic Vought A-7 Corsair II. It was also used by the air forces of several NATO nations and other U.S. allies. The F-100 was retired from service with the USAF in 1970 and by the Air National Guard in 1979.
