McDonnell Douglas originally manufactured the F-4H for the U.S Navy. When the U.S Air Force saw the great performance of the aircraft, they wanted it as well. Two U.S. Navy F-4H Phantom IIs; serial number 149405 and 149406 were delivered to Langley Field in Virginia for evaluation and re-numbered 62-12168 and 62-12169. In 1962 approval was given for the USAF variant to be designated the F-110. Later, to clear up confusion of the different designations both designs were named Phantom II. The US Navy variant became the F-4B and the USAF variant became the F-4C.
The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a two-seat twin-engine jet fighter originally developed for the U.S. Navy in the 1950s. Proven to be highly adaptable, it also became a major part of the air wings of the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Air Force. The Phantom was used extensively by all three of these services in the Vietnam War, serving as the principal fighter / bomber for the Navy and Air Force and in ground-attack and reconnaissance roles. The F-4 Phantom II was also sold to and operated by the armed forces of 11 other nations.
