In an effort to improve the performance of U.S. Navy aircrews in Vietnam, the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School was established in 1969 at NAS Miramar, California. The first aircraft used by the school to teach pilot’s better tactics were the A-4E Skyhawk and T-38 Talon (later replaced by the F-5E Tiger II). A-4E BuNo 151095 was flown by Lt. “Mick” Michell at the Top Gun school and was also used as “Jester’s” (Michael Ironside) aircraft in the 1986 movie “Top Gun”.
The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was a carrier capable light-attack bomber developed for the US Navy and Marine Corp. First flown in June 1954, the A-4s combat career began with carrier-launched raids over North Vietnam in 1964. The Navy began removing A-4's from its front-line squadrons in 1967, with the last one retired in 1975. The Marine Corps retired the Skyhawk in June 1994.
