The F6F Hellcat was a carrier-based fighter aircraft designed by Grumman as a replacement for the F4F Wildcat. The F6F was the primary U.S. Navy fighter during the latter half of World War II. It was known as a rugged, well-designed aircraft that was able to counter the Japanese A6M Zero fighter and help secure air superiority over the Pacific Theatre of operations. First flown on June 26, 1942, the F6F entered service in 1943 and proved to be the most successful aircraft in naval history, destroying 5,223 enemy aircraft while in service with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and the British Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm. A total of 12,275 F6F Hellcats were built, the last of which rolled off the assembly line in November 1945.
