Hobby Master 1:72 Air Power Series Diecast Model

Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat - Lt. Hamilton McWhorter III, VF-12, USS Randolph, US Navy, 1945

1:72 Scale.  Length: 5.5”.  Wingspan: 7.25"

The US Navy’s first Hellcat ace was Lt. Hamilton McWhorter. His first combat assignment was flying an F4F Wildcat with VF-9. When VF-9’s combat tour ended, McWhorter was assigned to VF-12 flying F6F Hellcats. He was with VF-12 aboard the USS Randolph on February 16, 1945 and took part in the first carrier based raid on Tokyo and scored one Zero victory. He went on to score 11 more victories. McWhorter retired from the US Navy in 1969 and was inducted into the Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame in 1989.

The F6F Hellcat was a carrier-based fighter aircraft designed by Grumman as a replacement for the F4F Wildcat. The F6F was the primary U.S. Navy fighter during the latter half of World War II. It was best known for its role as a rugged, well-designed aircraft that was able to counter the Japanese A6M Zero and help secure air superiority over the Pacific Theatre. First flown on June 26, 1942, the F6F entered service in 1943 and proved to be the most successful aircraft in naval history, destroying 5,223 enemy aircraft while in service with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and the British Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm. A total of 12,275 F6F Hellcats were built, the last of which rolled off the production line in November 1945.

Hobby Master offers a wide selection of quality, pre-assembled, diecast model airplanes. Each model is crafted to a high level of accuracy using specifications of the original aircraft. They are constructed with precision-made diecast metal and some plastic components.
