Hobby Master 1:72 Air Power Series Diecast Model

Lockheed F-104 C Starfighter - "Snoopy Sniper", Maj. Herb Drisco, 435th TFS, 8th TFW, USAF, Udorn RTAFB, Thailand, 1967-68 (Vietnam War era)

1:72 Scale.  Length: 9.25".  Wingspan: 3.75"

F-104C b/n 0-60914 "Snoopy Sniper" was piloted by USAF Major Herb Drisco of the 435th TFS from 1966-1967. In June 1966, F-104Cs from the 435th TFS “Screaming Eagles” started arriving at Udorn RTAFB, Thailand. They were painted in the South East Asia camouflage scheme that soon started to be referred to as "Vietnamese Camouflage". The Starfighters were armed with a 20mm M61A1 cannon that was fed 725 rounds stored in the fuselage. It could also carry a pair of wingtip mounted AIM-9B Sidewinder missiles and up to 2,000lbs of external ordnance, which included rockets, bombs, napalm or drop tanks, under the wings and fuselage. A later addition was the ability to carry a pair of Sidewinders under the fuselage. From June 1966 to July 1967 F-104Cs completed over 5,290 bombing and escort sorties into North Vietnam. In July 1967 the USAF began replacing the F-104s with the more efficient McDonnell F-4D Phantoms. The last F-104 left Thailand around the end of 1967 with the 435th TFS departing in July and returning to George Air Force Base in California.

The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was a single-engine, supersonic interceptor aircraft that served with the US Air Force from 1958 until 1967. In the Vietnam War the Starfighter was used in the air support role. Although Starfighters saw little aerial combat and scored no air-to-air victories they were successful in deterring MiG interceptors.
