Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat – “White 19”, LTJG Alex Vraciu, VF-6, USS Intrepid, U.S. Navy, February 1944
1:32 Scale. Length: 12.5”. Wingspan: 16"
Alexander Vraciu started flight training in late 1941, earning his wings in August 1942. His first assignment was VF-3 with his first aerial victory occurring in October 1943. Vraciu claimed his nineteenth and final aerial victory of the war on June 20, 1944. He was shot down in December 1944 and returned to the U.S. where he remained as a test pilot. He also destroyed twenty-one aircraft on the ground and one ship. Known as "Grumman's Best Customer" Vraciu survived two aircraft carriers being torpedoed, ditched twice and two parachute jumps.
The F6F Hellcat was a carrier-based fighter aircraft designed by Grumman as a replacement for the F4F Wildcat. The F6F was the primary U.S. Navy fighter during the latter half of World War II. It was known as a rugged, well-designed aircraft that was able to counter the Japanese A6M Zero fighter and help secure air superiority over the Pacific Theatre of operations. First flown on June 26, 1942, the F6F entered service in 1943 and proved to be the most successful aircraft in naval history, destroying 5,223 enemy aircraft while in service with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and the British Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm. A total of 12,275 F6F Hellcats were built, the last of which rolled off the assembly line in November 1945.
