On December 7, 1941 LCDR Howard Young, Commander Enterprise Group, USS Enterprise was leading 36 aircraft from the carrier back to Ford Island. Approaching land Young noticed aircraft over MCAS Ewa and thought this was odd for an early Sunday morning. Anti-aircraft explosions were sighted and an attacking aircraft came into view. Under attack the U.S. aircraft had no chance to become the attackers so they tried to elude the enemy aircraft. Unfortunately six SBDs were lost with the others landing safely, Young’s aircraft survived.
The Douglas SBD Dauntless was the main dive bomber of the US Navy from mid-1940 to 1944 when it was supplanted, although not entirely replaced, by the SB2C Helldiver. The Dauntless was used in every major Pacific conflict including the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944. A total of 5,936 SBDs were produced.
