The CH-47 Chinook is a twin-engine, tandem rotor, heavy-lift helicopter developed by American rotorcraft company Vertol and manufactured by Boeing Vertol (later known as Boeing Rotorcraft Systems). First flown on September 21, 1961, the first CH-47A was delivered to the U.S Army in August 1962. Roles include transport of troops and equipment, medical evacuation, search and rescue and parachute drops. The Chinook remains in service today with the U.S. Army and the military forces of many other countries. The upgraded CH-47D entered service in 1982.
