McCandless ventured 98m (322ft) from Challenger.
Space Shuttle Challenger (Designation OV-099) was NASA's second Space Shuttle orbiter to be put into service. First launched on April 4, 1983 Challenger completed nine missions before breaking apart 73 seconds after the launch of its tenth mission, STS-51L, on January 28, 1986 resulting in the death of all seven crew members.
Challenger was named after two previous vessels---first, HMS Challenger, a British naval Pearl class corvette that, from 1872 to 1876, was the command ship for the "Challenger expedition," conducting global marine research, and second, the Apollo 17 lunar module, which landed on the Moon in 1972.
