The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy is a large military transport aircraft operated by the U.S. Air Force. It provides the USAF with heavy intercontinental-range strategic airlift capability. The C-5 is easily identified by its large size, high wings and the distinctive T-tail. It has front and rear cargo doors allowing for simultaneous loading and unloading. The C5 is capable of transporting nearly every type of U.S. Army combat equipment including up to six Boeing AH-64 Apaches or five Bradley Fighting Vehicles (BFV). It also has an upper deck seating area for 73 passengers.
First flown on June 30, 1968, the C-5 Galaxy entered operational service with the USAF in June 1970. Between 1968 and 1989, 131 C-5s were built by Lockheed (81 C-5A and 50 C-5B). Some early model C-5s have now been retired while others have been upgraded with new engines and modernized avionics designed to extend their service life. These upgraded C-5s are designated C-5M Super Galaxy.
