The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is a large military transport aircraft used by the U.S. Air Force and the air forces of several other nations. First flown on September 15, 1991, the C-17 entered service with the USAF in July 1993. It commonly performs strategic airlift missions transporting troops and cargo throughout the world. Additional roles include medical evacuation and airdrop duties. The cargo area in the C-17 is 88 feet long by 18 feet wide and can accommodate some of the U.S Army's largest combat vehicles, including the 68-ton M1 Abrams tank, other armored vehicles, trucks and trailers. It is designed to airdrop 102 paratroopers and their equipment. The C-17 can transport troops, vehicles and palletized cargo in various configurations depending on the mission and can operate from runways as short as 3,500 feet.
