Discovery (OV-103), the third of NASAs fleet of reusable spacecraft, arrived at Kennedy Space Center in November 1983. It was launched on its first mission, flight 41-D, on August 30, 1984. It carried aloft three communications satellites for deployment by its astronaut crew. Discovery completed its final flight on March 9, 2011, having flown 39 successful missions, starting from STS-41-D until STS-133, in over 27 years of service.

Discovery is named for two famous British ships of exploration; one sailed by Henry Hudson in 1610-11 to search for a northwest passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and HMS Discovery, one of the ships commanded by James Cook during his third voyage in 1776–1779 during which he became the first European to discover the Hawaiian Islands.

To transport its fleet of Space Shuttle orbiters NASA employs two extensively modified Boeing 747 airliners. These large transporter aircraft are known as Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA), one being a 747-100 and the other a 747-100SR (short range). The Boeing 747 is ideal for this task owing to its low-wing design, although the drag and weight reduces its range to 1,000 nautical miles (1,850 km). On a transcontinental flight the SCAs need to land several times to refuel.


The Dragon Wings Space Collection includes high quality, fully assembled, die-cast models of spacecraft and rockets. Each model is crafted with meticulous attention to detail using original specifications. They are constructed with diecast metal and some plastic components.
