Car #1038 was one of 25 PCC cars (1016 through 1040) built for the San Francisco Municipal Railway (MUNI) in 1951-1952 by the Saint Louis Car Company. These cars used Westinghouse electrical gear and were the last PCC cars built in the United States. Car #1038 was one of only two cars given this paint scheme, the other being car 1040 which is still operational.
The Presidents Conference Committee streetcar design was first built in 1936. The design was successful, and after WWII was licensed for use elsewhere in the world. PCC cars proved to be a long lasting icon of streetcar design and are still in service in various places around the world.
