During the race across Normandy in the summer of 1944, lead elements of the U.S. Army's 3rd Armored Division linked up with the 30th Infantry Division. On July 8 the Vire River was crossed at Saint Fromond, with men of the 117th US Infantry Regiment riding the M4 Sherman Tanks of the 3rd Armored Division.
