McCampbell flew at least four F6F Hellcats while aboard the USS Essex, one of which was an F6F-5, 70143, named "Minsi III", in which he scored the last 23˝ of his 34 victories. On October 24,
1944, McCampbell and another pilot took on an overwhelming number of Japanese aircraft. They managed to make them retreat, but not before McCampbell claimed 9 victories.
The F6F was a US Navy carrier-based fighter aircraft developed to replace the F4F Wildcat. The F6F Hellcat and F4U Corsair were the primary US Navy fighters during the second half of World War II. First flown on June 26, 1942, the F6F Hellcat entered service in 1943. It proved to be the most successful aircraft in naval history, destroying 5,271 enemy aircraft while in service.
