Apollo 11 was the fifth human space flight of Project Apollo and the first manned lunar landing mission. Launched on July 16, 1969, it carried Mission Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, Jr. On July 20, 1969 at 20:47 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) the Apollo 11 lunar module landed on the Moon with Armstrong and Aldrin stepping on the surface around six hours later while Collins orbited above in the command module. After their mission was completed, the crew blasted off from the Moon in the lunar modules ascent stage. The ascent stage was abandoned in the Moon’s orbit after the crew docked with and reentered the command module. The LM still holds the record for the first and only crewed vehicle to land anywhere other than Earth.
