As one of the most popular performers on the U.K. Airshow circuit, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight has operated a C-47 Dakota since March of 1993. The Dakota has become a sought after display aircraft in her own right and is a regular sight at Airshows, performing by herself or with a BBMF Spitfire or Hurricane on each wingtip. The aircraft is currently presented as Dakota FZ692 “Kwicherbichin” of RAF No. 233 Squadron, which flew numerous flights in support of the D-Day landings, Operation Market Garden and the Rhine crossing during World War II.
Operating from her base at RAF Blakehill Farm, near Swindon, #FZ692 delivered paratroopers and supplies in support of the Allied invasion of Europe, before transferring to forward operating airfields in France as they became available. Once troops and supplies had been delivered, the aircraft would be used to transfer casualties back to the UK to receive the medical attention they could not obtain in the field. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s C-47 Dakota is a fitting tribute to the work of this magnificent aircraft and the unsung heroes of the RAF’s transport squadrons.
The C-47 Skytrain or Dakota (RAF designation) was a military transport aircraft developed from the Douglas DC-3 airliner. It was used by the United States and its Allies during World War II in a variety of roles that included airlifting supplies, casualty evacuation, glider towing and perhaps most famously dropping U.S. and Allied paratroopers into combat. Some of the modifications to the DC-3 included a large cargo door, a reinforced metal floor and upgraded landing gear. In the supply role the C-47 could carry up to 6,000 pounds of equipment. As a paratroop aircraft it was equipped with folding benches for 27 fully armed troops. After World War II thousands of surplus C-47s were converted for use by civilian airlines and private owners. Douglas Aircraft built more than 10,000 C-47s in numerous variants.
