Based in Italy by early 1918, RFC No. 45 Squadron was tasked mainly with ground attack and offensive patrols against Axis forces. Captain Matthew B. Frew, assigned to 45 Squadron, was credited with 23 aerial victories, 12 of which were claimed in this Camel F.1 along with a further five in the aircraft by squadron pilots C. N. Jones and J. Cottle, making this a highly successful example of the Sopwith biplane.
Frew was wounded in action by anti-aircraft fire on January 15, 1918 and medically evacuated the following month. He served with the RAF post-war in a number of positions including as the commander of 111 and 10 Squadrons. He retired in 1948 with the rank of Air Vice-Marshal and had been knighted.
The Sopwith Aviation Company produced the Camel F.1, a famous biplane of World War I. First flown in 1916, The Camel was the most successful fighter plane of the war and difficult to defeat when flown by a skilled pilot. Although highly maneuverable the Sopwith Camel was tricky to fly and more men lost their lives while learning to fly it than did during combat.
The Corgi Aviation Archive features a wide selection of high quality, ready-made, diecast model airplanes. Each model is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, using specifications of the original aircraft. Corgi models are built with diecast metal and some plastic components.
