'529' served with 810 Squadron aboard the HMS Courageous in December 1937. It was used in wheels and floats configuration. Later it served with FAA 701 Catapult Flight on exercises with capital warships such as HMS Hood, Barham and Valliant. The squadron also had a land base at Kalafrana Bay on Malta. During this time Fleet Air Arm aircraft were flown by RAF pilots and serviced by RAF crews aboard ship. The Royal Navy FAA provided Observers and Telegraphist Air Gunners (TAGs). This practice continued into the early years of World War II.

The Fairey Swordfish was a torpedo bomber built by the Fairey Aviation Company and used by the Fleet Air Arm of the British Royal Navy during WWII. Designed in the 1930s, the Swordfish remained in service to the end of the war in 1945. Approximately 2,400 of the aircraft were built.

The Swordfish was equally at home on wheels or floats which were easily interchanged, even on the flight deck of a warship. When operated with floats the aircraft would be recovered after flight by use of a deck crane. When operated from a ship the catapult was used for launching.
