846 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) is based at RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset. Equipped with 10 Sea King HC.4 Commando helicopters the squadron provides troop transport and load lifting support to 3 Commando Brigade, Royal Marines. Since 2008, 846 NAS Sea King helicopters have been heavily committed to the Helmand provinces in Afghanistan

The Westland Sea King is a British license-built version of the Sikorsky H-3. The Sea King HC4 is a commando assault, transport version operated by the Royal Navy and is still in service with 845, 846 and 848 Squadrons based at RNAS Yeovilton. The HC.4 is capable of transporting 28 fully equipped troops. (Also referred to as Westland Commando).
