Air Force 1 Model Company Die-cast Model

North American B-25B Mitchell – # 40-2303, “Whirling Dervish”, 34th Squadron, USAAF, “Doolittle Raid”, April 18, 1942

1:72 Scale.  Length: 8.75".  Wingspan: 11.25"

The B-25 Mitchell “Whirling Dervish”, piloted by Lt. Harold Francis Watson, conducted a highly effective bombing of Tokyo Gas and Electric Company on the shore of Tokyo Bay before flying to China. Arriving over land after dark and heavy rain, Watson ordered his crew to bail out 100 miles south of Pyong Lake.

Shortly after Japan launched a surprise attack on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941, a plan was devised to strike back. On April 18, 1942, in what became known as the “Doolittle Raid”, 16 B-25B Mitchell bombers, led by Lt. Col. James “Jimmy” Doolittle, were flown off the aircraft carrier USS Hornet close to Japan, bombed Tokyo and then continued on to China. Low on fuel, fifteen of the bombers subsequently crash landed en-route to recovery fields in eastern China while one landed intact in Siberia where its five-man crew was interned and the bomber confiscated. Of the 80 aircrew, 69 survived their historic mission and eventually made it back to American lines.

The B-25 Mitchell was a twin-engine medium bomber manufactured by North American Aviation and used by the United States and Allied air forces during World War II. It was named in honor of General Billy Mitchell, a pioneer of U.S. military aviation. First flown on August 19, 1940, the B-25 entered operational service in 1941. Nearly 10,000 B-25s were built in numerous variants.
