Shortly after Japan launched a surprise attack on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941, a plan was devised to strike back. On April 18, 1942, in what became known as the “Doolittle Raid”, 16 B-25B Mitchell bombers, led by Lt. Col. James “Jimmy” Doolittle, were flown off the aircraft carrier USS Hornet close to Japan, bombed Tokyo and then continued on to China. Low on fuel, fifteen of the bombers subsequently crash landed en-route to recovery fields in eastern China while one landed intact in Siberia where its five-man crew was interned and the bomber confiscated. Of the 80 aircrew, 69 survived their historic mission and eventually made it back to American lines.Realistic panel lines
