The AH-64 Apache is a twin-engine attack helicopter operated by the U.S. Army and the military forces of several other countries. Originally developed by Hughes Helicopters in the 1970s as a replacement for the Bell AH-1 Cobra, the Apache is now built by Boeing. The YAH-64 prototype was first flown on September 30, 1975, with the production model entering service in 1986. The AH-64 has served in conflicts in Panama, the Persian Gulf, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. Over 2,000 have been produced to date in several variants.

The AH-64D Apache Longbow prototype was first flown on May 14 1992. It provided a quantum leap in capabilities over the AH-64A and incorporated advanced avionics, digital enhancements and communications upgrades. The first production AH-64D was delivered to the U.S. Army in March 1997.
