The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is a multi-mission tiltrotor military aircraft with both vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) and short takeoff and landing (STOL) capability. It was designed to combine the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the long-range, high-speed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft. First flown on March 19, 1989, the V-22 was plagued for many years with production delays due to design changes and large cost overruns. Although it faced cancellation several times, the MV-22B entered operational service with the U.S. Marine Corps in 2007. It is supplementing and will eventually replace their Boeing Vertol CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters. The USAF fielded their version, the CV-22, in 2009. The aircraft has a crew of four and can carry 24 troops (seated), 32 troops (floor loaded) or 20,000 lbs. of internal cargo. It can also transport up to 15,000 lbs. of external cargo slung under the fuselage. Since entering service the Osprey has been deployed in operations over Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan and Libya.
