In 1952, While aboard the USS Bataan during the Korean War, VMA-312 "Checkerboards" pilot Capt. Jesse Folmar became the first American to shoot down a jet fighter with a propeller-driven aircraft. On September 10,1952, Captain Folmar was able to down one of a pair of MiG-15s that attacked him and his wingman, but was himself shot down when attacked by four other MiGs Capt. Folmar parachuted safely into the water and was rescued shortly thereafter.
The F4U Corsair was a carrier-capable fighter aircraft that saw service primarily in World War II and the Korean War. It paired a lightweight fuselage with a powerful engine and large propeller. The Corsair served in smaller air forces until the 1960s, following the longest production run of any piston-engined fighter in US history (1942–1952).
