In April 1962, the 57th Medical Detachment (Helicopter Ambulance) arrived in Vietnam with five HU-1 "Huey" helicopters. The Huey was instrumental in helping to increase the survival rate of wounded soldiers by airlifting them from the battlefield to hospitals. Medevac Hueys were often known by their radio call sign "Dustoff", which was used by the 57th Medical Detachment.
The Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter better known as the “Huey” first started arriving in Vietnam in 1962. It was used in a variety of roles including Medevac and as a troop and material transport. The UH-1 was also used for air assault and could be equipped with guns, rockets and grenade launchers. Introduced in 1959, over 16,000 Bell Huey helicopters were built in different variants
