In April 1986, F-111 70-2390 was the lead F-111 in Operation El Dorado Canyon, a strike against targets in Tripoli, Libya. The strike was ordered by President Ronald Reagan in retaliation for a Libyan sponsored bombing of a Berlin nightclub that killed 1 U.S. Serviceman, a Civilian and injured 200 others, of which 63 were U.S. Military personnel. The 48th TFW F-111s were chosen for their capability to fly long distances and deliver munitions with great accuracy
The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark entered service with the US Air Force in July 1967 as a medium-range aircraft designed for interdiction and tactical strike. The F-111 was also used as a strategic bomber, reconnaissance and an electronic warfare aircraft. Some unique features of the F-111 when it was introduced included variable-geometry wings, crew seating in an escape capsule cockpit, terrain following radar and afterburning turbofan engines.
