The U.S. Air Force 56th Special Operations Wing was formed in March 1967 with its mission to assist U.S. forces and friendly foreign government military forces throughout Indochina. The 602 Special Operations Squadron was assigned to the 56th SOW to provide air support and search and rescue (SAR) escort duty. The 602nd SOS also provided escort for helicopters inserting or extracting special ops personnel from Laos and North Vietnam. For three years the 602nd used TT as their aircraft tail letters and the call sign Firefly or Sandy for helicopter SAR escort.
The Douglas A-1 Skyraider was a single-seat attack bomber which continued in operation until the early 1970s. A propeller-driven anachronism in the jet age, the Skyraider had a remarkably long and successful career well into the space age. Used by the USN over Korea and Vietnam, the A-1 was a primary close air support aircraft for the USAF and VNAF in the Vietnam War.
